What is gum disease?
Gum (periodontal) disease, is a major cause of tooth loss as it adversely affects the tissues that support your teeth. It is a very common condition, thought to be caused by the bacteria in plaque, which results in gum inflammation (gingivitis). If this is left untreated, the disease can progress and go on to destroy gums, soft tissue and even the bone that holds your precious teeth in place.
Though around 90% of the India population are affected, for most people the condition is not too severe and can be treated with ongoing therapy from your dentist. However, for approximately 10-15% of sufferers it is far more serious and treatment by a periodontist is usually required to prevent significant gum recession, tooth movement or even premature tooth loss. There is also strong evidence to suggest that untreated gum disease can increase the risk of other conditions such as heart disease and diabetes, so it’s wise to keep a close eye on your gums.
